Description: A very rare original WW2 British map of LIBYA entitled "EL ADEM" showing a section of TOBRUK'S DEFENCES during the BATTLE of GAZALA, in which TOBRUK was lost to the enemy. "NOT TO BE PUBLISHED" The small town of EL ADEM was the site of an important airfield just outside Tobruk's defensive perimeter. A long section of this perimeter is shown on the map, with around 35 'Strong Points' individually numbered, half of which were concrete positions housing Anti-Tank Guns and Machine Guns. The inner perimeter was separated by barbed wire entanglements, mine fields and tank traps etc. (See my second image for a graphic which shows the wider defences.) Strangely, there is no reference to these positions in the key on the back, unlike the "TOBRUCH DEFENCES" map I had a few months ago, but it was printed at a critical time in May 1942, just as the BATTLE of GAZALA began. Within a few weeks, TOBRUK had fallen. In great condition for its age and service use. Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines. Please see my other WW2 (and WW1) maps, documents, photos etc. Seller's Ref - WALL0824 / 9
