Description: South Georgia 102 Adel GA 10-29-1939 by Harold C. DuBal's 5x7 camera.102 4-6-0 Baldwin #35196 9/1910 18x26" 56" 125,000# New. Lettered for South Georgia & West Coast. Cost $11,200.To Birmingham Rail & Locomotive Co. Scrapped 1/1941. The South Georgia Railroad was incorporated in Georgia on February 6, 1896. The road was opened from Quitman, GA to Heartpine, GA, 28 miles, in February 1897. An extension from Quitman, GA to Greenville, FL, 23 miles, was put in operation on June 15, 1901. The name was changed to South Georgia Railway in 1902, and the northern terminus chantged from Heartpine to Adel, GA in 1904. The West Coast Railway was chartered in Florida on November 1, 1900, and the road opened from Greenville, FL to Hampton Springs, FL, 31 miles, on September 1, 1904. At the date of completion it was leased to the South Georgia Railway for 20 years at a yearly rental of 8 percent of the cost of the road and maintenance. From Adel, GA to Greenville, FL the country traversed was somewhat rolling, while from Greenville to Hampton Springs it was low and level. The track was laid mostly with new 56-lb. rail and the entire line was full earth surfaced. There were no important bridges on the road. The railroad connected with the Southern Ry. at Adel, GA, the Seaboard Air Line at Greenville, FL. and the Live Oak Perry & Gulf and Atlantic Coast Line at Perry, FL. In 1946 the Brooks-Scanlon Corp., purchased the South Georgia along with the Live Oak Perry & Gulf. Both roads were sold to the Southern Railway on September 16, 1954 and both roads were upgraded to class one standards by April 1, 1956 so that larger locomotives and cars could be operated. The South Georgia's doodlebug was then discontinued and they begin using larger diesels of the Southern. This marks the end of short line services on both roads.
