Description: Signed 1965 Rondal Partridge Photo San Francisco Airport (SFO) TWA Terminal Signed 1965 Rondal Partridge Photo San Francisco Airport (SFO) TWA Terminal Click images to enlarge Description Original Rondal Partridge black and white glossy silver print on single weight paper of the interior of the Trans World Airlines (TWA) terminal at the San Francisco airport, signed by Partridge on the verso with his blind stamp, about 3.5 by 10 inches, in fine condition (the photo curls up when taken out of the folder it is currently stored). The photo was taken for Welton Becket and Associates, a Los Angeles, California architectural firm in 1965 during a restoration of the airport. Rondal Partridge's printed credit stamp and image number are both on the verso with the credit stamp of Welton Becket. If you are familiar with the airport, you know that the TWA terminal was one of the largest and most modern at the airport at that time. Thus, this is both a great photograph and also an historical record of a bygone era. During his career, Partridge was commissioned by many of the top architects in the country to shoot their projects. In a typical assignment, he would expose many rolls of film and the client would select a handful of the best images for their files to record their work or for advertising. Rarely would more than ten, usually fewer, original prints be made of any image. Rondal Partridge also happens to be the son of Imogen Cunningham. He began his career in the 1930's as a photographic assistant to Ansel Adams and then Dorothea Lange at the Farm Security Administration. Later he gained fame as a photo-journalist. He also became well-known as an architectural photographer, an expert in handling light and shadow. Today his work is sold in many galleries in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. However, I have spoken to Partridge and he claims to have no architectural photos in his possession, and, thus, none are offered by the galleries. A comprehensive monograph on Partridge, Quizzical Eye: The Photography of Rondal Partridge, however, does discuss his philosophy of shooting buidlings. Sadly Partridge passed away recently.
