Unlike other roaches; they cannot climb smooth surfaces like glass or plastic! Recommend enclosure size is 18 – 30 Gal. You can use Glass aquariums, Plastic Totes/Tubs (as pictured in video), or Plastic Insect Carriers with ventilated lids can be used. [Covers & Ventilation] Although these roaches cannot climb, it is wise to cover their enclosure so nothing gets in. Aquariums can be covered with mesh screen covers used for reptiles. Plastic Tub/Totes are sold with heavy-duty plastic covers. Provide ventilation for a plastic tub by cutting a hole in the cover or on the sides (close to the top). Then place mesh over the hole (use hot-glue or strong adhesive tape to attach). [Substrate] Red Runner roaches need places to stand and places to hide. Cardboard egg crates provide the best surface area per square inch. We recommend stacking the egg crate flats vertically so the Red Runner roach droppings fall to the bottom of the housing. Make sure that the cover is on tight and that the egg crate does not extend so close to the top of the enclosure that the roaches can crawl out (a good inch from top edge to top of eggcrate is ideal). [Housing Temperature & Humidity] Although Red Runner roaches can survive at room temperatures of 60-70 F, they require an ambient temperature of 80 F to successfully breed. You may wish to use a heat pad or heat lamp in order to provide them with warmth. Red Runner roaches can survive at high room humidity, but it's recommended to keep the humidity range between (40% and 60%). [Feeding] Keep a small food and water bowl in their home. We recommend using water crystals, any dry roach feed, along with adding in some fresh fruit, vegetables, or even table scraps. We have found feeding once to twice a week works well. [Foods We Feed] Repashy Bug Burger, Chicken Feed, Bananas, Carrots, Lettuce, Oak leaves, Oatmeal, Orange slices, Pearl barley, Potato, Peaches, Plums, Apples OOTHECA EGG CARE/INFO -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[Egg Laying] Females Red Runners are very prolific and can lay 1-2 ootheca (egg cases) per month! Each ootheca produced contains any where from 20-30 roaches inside! [Hatching] The ootheca will take 2-6 weeks to hatch depending on environment. They are susceptible to drying out, so make sure the humidity (best at 40% - 60%) and temperature (best at 75 - 80 F) are optimized. WE HARVEST FROM OUR IN-HOUSE CULTURES (NOT COLLECTED IN THE WILD) IF COLLECTED IN THE WILD YOU MAY INTRODUCE HARMFULL PATHOGENS [COMMONLY ASKED QUESTION] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Q. Can red runners infest? A. Despite the rumors that this species can infest; it cannot and will not infest a clean house, space, or environment. If no food source is provided roaches cannot survive. If you are familiar with Dubias (a widely & commonly used feeder roach in the reptile industry); the Red Runner Roach runs similarly around the same chances of infesting as the Dubia.
