Description: Original antique color lithographed 1888 map of the colony of Western Australia, printed more than 135 years ago. There is wonderful detail throughout, with cartography by John Bartholomew. The map shows cities, towns, railroads, telegraph lines, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief and the border outlined in a light orange. Among the named places and features are the proclaimed goldfields in the Kimberley District, Shark Bay, Roebourne, Dampier Land, Tropic of Capricorn, Great Victoria Desert, Doubtful Island Bay, Albany, Perth, Whitfield, Bunbery, Race Course Plain, Dirk Hartog Island, Collier Bay, Busselton, Geraldine Mine, and points reached by various explorers. There's a number key to 26 counties below the distance scale. The map was issued in the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, in 1888. The image area measures 27 x 21 cm [10¾" x 8¼"]. It is identified in the upper margin as Plate X, Volume XXIV. Western Australia was a colony of the British Empire until it became a State in the federal Commonwealth of Australia, 13 years after this map was printed. Condition: The map is in very good condition, clean and sound, with a horizontal center fold, as issued, faint toning in the margins, and no rips, tears, or writing. The map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It would make an impressive display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which it was published.
