Description: ARTIST: Søren Christian Bjulf is a well-listed Danish artist, whose works have been offered at auctions (f.ex. Bonham’s, Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Bruun Rasmussen) multiple times. He was born in Løgstør in Jutland and died in Roskilde, Sjælland. He lived in Paris and Düsseldorf for around 11 years before returning to Denmark again. He is most famous for his rendering of the fish market at Gammel Strand in Copenhagen, but has painted many other scenes as well, such as interiors, landscapes, city-scapes, still-life and people interacting in everyday situations. He sometimes signed his paintings using the pseudonym “H.A. Brinch”. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a classic and classy rendering of life at the old fish market at Gammel Strand (litt. “old beach”) in Copenhagen. Now situated in the center of the city close to one of the canals, in medieval times this area was actually a beach surrounded by shallow water and therefore an optimal place for fishermen to anchor their boats and sort the catch of the day. Later it became a marketplace and a swarm of people would come and go every day. Throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th century, Gammel Strand was dominated by the fishermen’s wives from Skovshoved, who, wearing their traditional regional costumes, would try to sell the fish their husbands had caught. Fine ladies from the rich bourgeoisie saw these fishermen’s wives in their regional costumes as a symbol of “provincial health” and would often come to the market to buy fresh fish, which is exactly what the painting shows. The yellow building to the left is “Thorvaldsen’s museum” – dedicated to the famous Danish sculptor Berthel Thorvaldsen. The fish market at Gammel Strand was a popular scene for Bjulf, and he had a gallery of characters, who would typically figure in these paintings – f.ex. a postman, a police officer or, as in this case, the fine ladies. On the back of the frame are some enigmatic numbers. It says “2 XI 8”. I don’t know what the roman numerals “XI”/11 is supposed to mean – maybe November? -, but I think the 2 and 8 probably dates the painting to 1928. Signed: “H.A. Brinch” in the lower right corner and on the back of the canvas. SIZE: With frame: 96,5 cm/38" * 76,5 cm/30.1". Without frame: 89 cm/35” * 69 cm/27.2". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint, but it has some faint stretcher-marks. The frame has minor scratches and stains.
