Description: Original Civil War Era Union Army Sabre or Sword Bayonet for the Model 1842 Rifle & Model 1962 Merrill Navy Rifle - Original - Very NICE Condition - RAREUp for sale is an Original Civil War Era Union Army Sabre or Sword Bayonet for the Model 1842 Rifle & Model 1862 Merrill Navy Rifle. Bayonet only, no scabbard. This bayonet is dated 1861 on the base of the blade. It also has two serial numbers stamped on the back edge of the handle. There is a small "G" stamped on the back of the handle, next to the muzzle ring. The blade and handle are in Very NICE Condition. The blade is bright. No rust or pitting on the blade. Some discoloration spots of the blade. The bayonet is approximately 30 1/4" overall length, with a 25 3/8" blade. The muzzle ring opening is approximately 0.895" in diameter. The bayonet is used, please see photos for details and condition. This is a Very NICE example of this bayonet.The last three photos are from the reference book "The American Bayonet 1776-1964", page 123, showing the identification of this bayonet.
