Description: After more than 60 years of collecting items of interest, especially Civil War items, it is time to move my collection along to new homes. I have a special interest in Ft. Fisher items as I had two great-grandfathers there and along with their brothers who were captured when the fort fell in Feb 1865. The US Navy and Army tried unsuccessfully to take the "Gilbralter of the South" and finally succeeded in Feb 1865 with what was the largest combined amphibious assault in US history until D-Day in 1944. Over the years, I have bought many things related to the fort when they would come up for sale. These musket parts were packaged together in an estate sale with lots of Civil War relics but not labeled other than being recovered at Ft. Fisher in NC. The parts that are included are the hammer (broken) and trigger, two screws for the trigger plate, side plate, and the forward barrel support. You can see where the forward barrel support has an opening for the ramrod. None of these items have been conserved and while the hammer, trigger, and side plate are stable, the forward barrel support is flaking rust. There is a rear sight included that appears to have undergone some amateur conservation sometime in the past. There are several models of the sights that were used on the Springfield model and this appears to be period correct. When the Confederate Government seized the US Armories that were in the south, they got their hands on the old .69 and .58 caliber Springfields and the Federal Army quickly updated their troops with better arms so this gun was almost certainly being used by a Confederate soldier at Ft. Fisher. By the size of the hole in the forward barrel support, it looks more like the 1842 .69 caliber Springfield model, which leads me further to be confident that this was a Confederate used gun. With the hammer broken, it is highly probable that it was broken in the hand to hand combat that ensued when the US Army finally broke through the northwest salient and the guns were used as clubs since there was no time to reload these single shot weapons. My son recently picked out the items he wants from my collection, so I am free to sell or give away the rest. As everything needs to find a new home, I am offering at a very good price and provide FREE SHIPPING to within the US.
