C1885 Naive Style New England Seascape Painting. Waves Crashing. Angelic Sky

Description: For sale is an exceptional 19th century naïve style New England School seascape painting. The painting is oil on canvas and circa 1885 in age. The painting features, a lovely New England rocky coastline scene with crashing waves against the shore. The most amazing thing about this painting is the angelic shapes of the clouds where the sun pierces through the white puffy clouds casting its warm yellowy glow on the rocky shoreline and the rolling wave caps. It seems very likely that the artist purposefully shaped the clouds to give the sense of God's presence in nature. This was also the idea of the Hudson River school painters who tried to capture the sublime, the unseen hand of God, in their landscape paintings. One of the larger waves below seems to be mimicking this angelic form as its white cap begins crashing, suggesting a harmony between the sky above and the ocean waters below. Out deeper into the ocean you can spot 4 two masted schooners and one single mast sailboat sailing about on this warm New England summer day. The canvas keyed out with the ADS (Aaron Draper Shattuck) metal keys which were popular on the East Coast, more specifically in the late 19th century to through the of the century. A spectacular painting!! Unsigned as far as we can see. Condition: This untouched painting is screaming for a cleaning and removal of the old yellowed varnish. There are beautiful bright colors hiding behind what is probably the original discolored varnish layer, which in some areas is hazing and yellowing. Surface grime appropriate with age. Normal paint loss to the frame edge. No rips or tears noted. Overall fine condition for a 19th century painting. This painting would look incredible all cleaned up and mounted in a fluted deep cove gold gilded picture frame!!
