IN THE TATE GALLERY, LONDON The animal-painter in England has, perhaps, a harder task to secure popular favour than any of his brethren of the brush. To the public at large there is, even now, but one great British animal-painter----Landseer. All others since have had to endure comparison with him, and so tenacious is the Landseer tradition that the popular vote is always cast against the modern worker in this direction. Moreover, the tradition has affected some of the painters themselves: the temptation to court public favour has been too strong, and animal-pictures with the Landseer touch of human sentiment have never been lacking in any Academy exhibition since that artist's death. Even Mr. Briton Riviere, one of our finest living animal-painters, has, at times, fallen under the spell and given us pictures which have almost out-Landseered Landseer. But, fortunately, these lapses have been rare, and there are many canvases which bear testimony to his great individuality. His deep knowledge of animal anatomy, his keen observation, and close study of form and movement have been demonstrated so often that it is unnecessary to cite examples. This weird painting of an Arctic landscape, with the solitary polar bear as its representation of animal life, worthily represents this finer side of his art in the Chantrey Collection, for which it was purchased in 1894. Mr. Briton Riviere was born in 1840, a descendant of an old Huguenot family which found refuge in England at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. His artistic talents were part of his birthright, for his grandfather, Dr. Riviere, was a medallist at the Royal Academy and a water-colour painter of note, and his father was the art master at Cheltenham College, and later on was the means of securing the admission of art into the curriculum at Oxford. It was from his father that Mr. Briton Riviere had his early teaching in drawing and painting; he afterwards proceeded to Oxford and took his M.A. degree. He exhibited first at the Royal Academy in 1858 with a picture entitled "Rest from Labour," and was elected an Associate in 1878, and a full Academician in 1881.
