Description: This book is The Missouri Archaeologist, Vol. 14, October, 1952. This is a fourth printing produced in year 2020. It includes three articles, "The Spiro Mound" by Henry W. Hamilton, with a preface by James B. Griffith "An Interpretation of the Place of Spiro in Southeastern Archaeology" by James B. Griffith "Textile Fabrics from the Spiro Mound" by Charles C. Willoughby Spiro Mound in Le Flore County, OK was excavated by people looking for artifacts to sell during the Great Depression of the 1930s. They found what has been described as the King Tut's Tomb of the United States because of the wonderful artifacts they found. Henry Hamilton and others recognized the significance of the finds and their archaeological importance so he undertook to document the find before the artifacts were futher dispersed and the information forever lost. He completed this book in 1952, less than 20 years after the excavation, when many of those with first hand knowledge were alive for interview. The first part of the book describes the site, the artifacts, and their discovery and the last 150 pages are photo-illustrations and drawings of the fabulous artifacts. The plates include photos of the mounds, effigy pipes (including the Big Boy pipe shown in the scan), wooden human effigies, a wooden mask with deer antlers, effigy stone bowls, the largest number of chipped stone maces ever found in one place, large stone blades (up to 22 inches), arrowpoints, chipped and ground stone spuds, copper axes with wooden handles intact, monolithic axes, discoidals, boatstones, bannerstones, textiles, beads, copper effigies, ear spools, and shell pendants, and several pages of drawings of shell engravings showing humans and animals. Softcover, 6 by 9 inches, 276 pages, new condition. Shadows on the scans are because I didn't want to press the book flat on my scanner and maybe damage the spine, there are no shadows on the actual pages. Buyer to pay $6.00 P&H please.
