Description: Antique Japanese Meiji Era (c1910’s) Kiri Kodansu Personal Tansu 5 Drawer 24"W This is an antique Japanese Meiji era (1868-1912) kodansu (personal chest). Used for storing documents, money and other precious items it is made of solid Kiri wood (paulownia) front and Sugi wood case (Japanese cedar). Kodansu chest were a special piece used to store one's most valued items. Height = 30" Width = 24” Depth = 13.5" This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina. It remains in fine antique condition and should serve well for another century or more of use. A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and very solid and functional piece of furniture. We often have custom iron bases made for tansu such as this to bring it up to your preferred elevation. These take 3-6 week to have made and add around $300 to the over cost.
