Antique, hardcover, buckram clothbound 1840 edition of Nicholas Nickleby by Dickens. According to my research this book appears to be the first American edition, third printing in one volume as Nickleby was first issued in one volume in 1839 with no portrait plate and later in 1839 an edition with a portrait was issued, this edition is fully collated with 40 plates and is dated 1840 with portrait plate at the frontispiece and is numbered 403 pages with no publisher's advertisement pages after the last page. Exterior of the book shows rubbing and chipping to the spine and outer corner edges of the coverboards as well as some white paint flecks. First two front endpapers have reinforcements at the gutters, as does the gutter between the back two endpapers (see image). With reinforcements the binding is sturdy. Book has former 19th century owner's name written in ink on front endpapers. Book is internally still for the most part bright with scattered foxing to many pages, a bit of staining to the upper margins of pages at the beginning of the book and some occasional pencil notations in the margins. Pages are still sturdy and not at all brittle. Book is complete with all pages present and none coming loose, detached or missing. Book totals 403 pages, measures approximately 10 1/8 x 6 1/2 x 1 3/8 inches and weighs about 1 3/4 pounds.
