Description: You are purchasing a 1949 Bowman card #132 PSA graded 5 of Al Evans. This card is well centered with clean corners and edges. In a 12-season career, Evans was a .250 hitter (514-for-2053) with 13 home runs and 211 RBI in 704 games, including 188 runs, 70 doubles, 23 triples, 14 stolen bases, and a .332 on-base percentage. In 647 catching appearances, he recorded 2295 outs, 284 assists, 51 double plays, and committed 56 errors in 2635 chances for a .979 fielding percentage. The 1949 Bowman set consists of 240 cards, each measuring 2-1/16" by 2-1/2”. The series featured black-and-white player photographs with the addition of color to the team uniforms placed and backgrounds with several different pastel shades. Both elements marked major changes made by Bowman from the preceding year's black-and-white production. The Jackie Robinson (#50) is considered to be the premier card in the set and is followed by Stan Musial (#24), Bob Feller (#27), Ralph Kiner (#29), Warren Spahn (#33), Pee Wee Reese (#36), Roy Campanella (#84), Larry Doby (#233), Satchell Paige (#224) and Duke Snider (#226). The set is riddled with variations, beginning with card #109 in the set (Ed Fitzgerald), in which Bowman added the players’ names on the card fronts. Twelve cards (#s 4, 78, 83, 85, 88, 98, 109, 124, 127, 132 and 143), which were produced in the first four series of printings, were reprinted in the seventh series with either a card front or back modification (primarily the name printed in either script or block letters). Cards #s 1-3 and #s 5-73 can be found with either white or gray backs. This card is a must have for any vintage or Al Evans collector/fan/investor! Alfred Hubert Evans (September 28, 1916 – April 6, 1979) was an American Major League Baseball catcher and a Minor League manager. Listed at 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m) tall and 190 pounds (86 kg), Evans batted and threw right-handed. He was born in Kenly, North Carolina. Basically a contact, line-drive hitter, Evans was a fine reserve catcher with a strong throwing arm. As many big leaguers, he saw his baseball career interrupted while serving in the US Navy during World War II. Evans reached the majors in 1939 with the Washington Senators, playing for them four years before joining the military (1943–44). He was released from the Navy in time for the end of the 1944 season with the Senators, staying with the club until 1950. His most productive season came in 1949, when he posted career-highs in games (109), batting average (.271), RBI (42), runs (32), and doubles. He also played briefly with the Boston Red Sox in 1951, his last Major League season. Following his playing retirement, Evans managed for the New York Yankees (1955), Kansas City Athletics (1955–1959) and Minnesota Twins (1963–1965) minor league systems. He also scouted for the Senators and their post-1960 identity, Twins, as well as the San Francisco Giants. Evans died in Wilson, North Carolina, at age 62.Buy with confidence.
