Description: 29" x 51" From a recent Maine auction, this is a 19th century antique, handmade rug in very good condition. It's made with wool yarns, hooked onto a burlap foundation. The theme is Irish -- shamrocks and roses with purple thistles in the corners in a design held together by a golden, double-ended arrow. Perhaps this arrow is a symbol of the great Irish emigration that began in the mid-19th century. The Rose represents England, the Thistle represents Scotland, and the Shamrock represents Ireland. Those three symbols together represent the difficult 121 year period from 1801 to 1922 when Ireland had lost its sovereignty and was violently forced into the United Kingdom with England and Scotland. The colors are strong and this is in very good condition, with noticeable wear only to the wool binding on the edges. The front has some fading and the natural red dye has run. I think the red dye was made from madder root which produces a variety of reds including blood red and fiery reds. weighs 5 lbs
