Description: Original color lithographed topographical map of parts of Tulare and Inyo counties, California, printed more than 52 years ago. This map was compiled and published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior. It is identified as the 1956 edition of the Mount Whitney quadrangle, from aerial photographs in 1955, field checked in 1956, with limited revision in 1967. The image area measures 44.5 x 36 cm [17½" x 14"], and the coverage area is bounded by longitude 118°15' W to 118°30' W and 36°30' N to 36°45' N. The map is drawn on a scale of 1:62,500, with contour lines at 80-foot intervals. It locates dirt roads, trails, benchmarks, lakes, and natural features in parts of Sequoia National Park and Inyo National Forest, and Mount Whitney, the highest mountain in the contiguous United States, with an elevation of 14,505 feet (4,421 meters). Among the other named places and features are Crabtree Lakes, Kern Canyon, Tunnabora Peak, Keeler Needle, Pinnacle Ridge, Colby Pass, Caltech Peak, High Sierra Trail, Chagoopa Plateau, Junction Meadow, Wallace Lake, Tyndal Creek Patrol Cabin, Milestone Bowl, Kings-Kern Divide, Mt. Whitney Trail, Diamond Mesa, Tawny Point, Tulainyou Lake, Gregory's Monument, and the John Muir Trail. Condition: The map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It has been lightly folded to approximately 10½" x 8½". It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
