Description: WICHITA BAND INSTRUMENT COMPANY, since 1953! ***A RARE FLUTE from the W.S. Haynes Workshop, "handmade" pattern, soldered tone-holes, all solid silver, made in Boston in 1955. A rare silver flute from the workshop of William S. Haynes serial number 24,951, made ,951 Boston in 1955. "Hand-made” pattern, Plateau (closed holes) keywork, “offset” G key, range to low C. *** PLEASE NOTE *** In the years that the Haynes family owned the workshop in Boston, TWO MODELS of closed-hole (plateau keyed) flutes were constructed. The "Regular Model" was based on the work of 19th. century flutist Theobald Boehm, with tone-holes extruded from the tube, with flat pad-cups and "y-arm" construction. The bodies were usually of .018 silver. The "Hand-Made" model was closer to the designs of the Godfroy and Lot workshops of 19th. century Paris. That means .014 (usually) silver tube thickness, tone-holes soldered to the silver tube of the body and with key-arms extended over pad cups. *** Have a look at two pages from the Haynes catalog of 1947. It explains the differences. *** Our "Hand-Made Plateau" is a most comfortable, user-friendly instrument that is truly a joy to play. It "feels" just right, with a sweet voice and a rich lower register with magnificent overtones. We do indeed like the "Regular Models", but the HM Plateaus are, in our estimation, superior in tone-color and feel. ***On our #24,961.... Body, head and foot are of .014 inch silver. Tone-holes are soldered, key arms extend over the pad-cups. Sounding length is 599 mm, which means the flute plays well at 440 (perhaps 441, not 442) pitch. Embouchure is original, measures 10.2 X 12.0 mm. The flute weighs 435 grams. The blue-lined case bears the Haynes stamp and appears to be the 1955 original. Engraving is sharp on the head and body sections and there is no evidence of dents or dings to the body. Hinge-tubes are still tight, indicating that the instrument’s been played very little in the past 70 years. This particular flute exhibits superb workmanship, arguably quite different to that of modern instruments from the Haynes firm. Flute questions? Write me! Always glad to hear from flute people! ************************************************************************ *** In January of 2024 our small workshop in Wichita celebrated seventy-one years in business. We would be pleased to furnish you with references attesting to the above. **** Wichita Band Instrument Company is a small musical instrument emporium located in the center of the USA. We’ve been in business since 1953 and have had the same owner since 1963. Originally we were a repair shop that specialized in woodwind and sax restoration. *** Virtually ALL the items we sell have been fully reconditioned in our own shop, although we do sell a few unrestored historical instruments each year. *** Wichita Band’s service warranty is the same as it’s been for more than thirty years. “ALL new and all used instruments sold by Wichita Band Instrument Company come with our 24 month service warranty. It’s in addition to any factory guarantees. For two full years, we will repair or replace, whichever in our estimation is the more advisable, pads, corks, springs or other parts required, at no charge to the customer. The customer is responsible for shipping and insurance charges. Cases and plating finishes are not covered by our service warranty but are sometimes covered by factory guarantees.” *** Wichita Band Instrument Company maintains a repair department capable of restoration work of the highest quality. Even though repairs are essentially “free” for the first two years, after that period has expired, we remain at your service to maintain and repair your musical equipment forever. It’s our “service after the sale” promise and has been since 1953! In the event that a customerrequires service under factory guarantees or Wichita Band’s service warranty, the item must be returned to us and not directly to the manufacturer. International shipping is available. Buyers outside of the USA are responsible for all import duties and customs clearance charges in their respective countries. We may refuse PayPal and/or credit card payments from some countries. Returned items will be refunded within one week of our receiving the item. Ebay authorized payment methods: PayPal or credit/debit card processed through our internet merchant account. *** We’re happy to respond to any and all questions about flutes and other musical instruments, but please don’t write and ask “What’s granny’s mellophone worth?” We kindly recommend an Ebay search with which you’ll learn more than we’d ever be able to tell you.
