It began operations in 1871, and the intention was to extend the line west to California; this never happened, however. The T&P ran generally along a route from New Orleans (LA) to near El Paso (TX), serving Shreveport (LA), Dallas and Fort Worth (TX), and southern Oklahoma, with a branch line extending into southeastern New Mexico. The Missouri Pacific Railroad (MP) gained control of the T&P through stock purchases in 1928, but the T&P operated separately until merged into the MP in 1976. The MP was eventually acquired by the Union Pacific (UP) in 1997 after years of legal wrangling. Surviving T&P trackage is now primarily operated by the UP.
