This coin is distinctively semi-proof-like on both sides -- and has a fully proof-like look on the obverse -- with mirrors reaching 2 to 3 inches. It is not a good candidate for re-submission (at least to PCGS or NGC. There's at least an even-money chance that ANACS or ICG would give it a PL designation.) Cameo ContrastDespite that, the obverse does look very much proof-like and features PL-quality cameo contrast. As such, eye appeal is extremely strong, especially for the grade. The obverse also features a splash of toning from 10 to 12 o'clock, with orange and blue color when viewed in full light. Though its mirrors are just as strong, the reverse does not have any real cameo and low contrast. It nonetheless has blast-white devices, a sharp strike and well-above-average eye appeal. VAM 7 Though not designated on the holder, this coin is unquestionably a VAM 7. Among its features is a doubled date with a strongly doubled 18-0, the well-known "3 dot" pinpoints of metal below the date and a slightly doubled mint mark (very difficult to see the "S/S" loop without a loupe or other strong magnifier.) This variety is in the second-tier of 1880-S VAMs -- not a Top 100 or Hit List, but distinctive and popular enough to earn a small premium over lesser- or non-VAMs. +++ If you have any questions about this or any item, please let us know.
