Description: St John's College, Oxford University. The Canterbury Quadrangle.Large antique etching produced by George Vertue in 1734.Not a later reprint. An original on laid paper. Print is 43cm by 34cm, set within a larger mount. One very small closed tear at the bottom edge but otherwise very good condition. This image was produced for the 'Oxford Almanack'. The Almanack was published every year from 1674 and the tradition only ended in 2019. An eminent artist would be asked to produce the image (contributors included J M W Turner). Beneath it was another section. A calendar for the academic year with important dates and also lists of heads of college. This lower section has often been removed, and it isn't present with this example. Just the large etching. The image shows Dr Sherwood on the left holding a plan of the botanic garden. He is receiving a procession of officials. The British Museum has an example of this print, and and on its website identifies all the individuals shown in the image. Free UK delivery (LF)
