More Info on this Athlete: Gene Tunney (born James Joseph Tunney; born May 25, 1897 in Greenwich Village, New York City, United States; † November 7, 1978 in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States) was an American boxer and the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion from 1926 to 1928. Tunney began professional boxing in 1915. His only defeat came in 1922 in the light heavyweight division on points against middleweight Harry Greb, who broke his nose in the first round. However, he later defeated Greb several times. In the heavyweight division, he knocked out Georges Carpentier in 1924 and was the only one to defeat Tommy Gibbons prematurely. During his world championship victory on points over heavyweight legend Jack Dempsey on September 23, 1926, numerous spectators in the Philadelphia stadium were disappointed that it was not the usual fierce exchange of blows, but rather a tactical fight from a distance. The fight went over ten rounds. The rematch, also a ten-rounder, took place on September 22, 1927 at Soldiers Field in Chicago. Tunney boxed Jack Dempsey out again, but the latter sent Tunney to the ground in the seventh round with a combination. But Dempsey forgot to go to the neutral corner after the knockdown, which is why the count was significantly delayed. Tunney was able to continue the fight, knocking down Dempsey in the eighth round and winning on points, but the myth of the "Long Count" arose, as Tunney was down for just under 15 seconds and many therefore saw Dempsey as the winner. In 1928, Gene Tunney resigned. This made him the second heavyweight world champion to retire undefeated as the reigning title holder. The first was James J. Jeffries (1875–1953). After his seventh successful title defense, he resigned on May 13, 1905. The third to do so was Rocky Marciano in 1956. In 1990, Tunney was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. VG/EX (Very Good/Excellent): Usually a card is VG/EX due to rounding or severe dings on the corners, may also have moderate wrinkling, light scuffing or staining. VG (Very Good): A worn card, usually with one or more light creases. May also have gloss loss, scuffing or staining. G (Good): A well worn or abused card. Good cards often have multiple creases and/or a moderate or severe crease, and have other flaws like rounded corners. P (Poor): Worse than good cards -- sometimes ripped, slightly torn or with some paper loss. Some cards are graded P due to multiple severe creases.
